Networking in European Steel Research (NEST)
In the last century a collaborative steel R&D network has been developed, supported especially by the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) research and technical development programme. This steel R&D network has become a driving force for the European steel industry to become a global technological leader in its field and to stands well prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
To identify the players in Europe’s steel R&D EUROFER has made an inventory of this steel R&D network in Europe, as part of the activities of the EU funded thematic network NEST (New Efficient Steel Technologies). The results were published in a first booklet in 2002. The intention was by making known the R&D players to stimulate participation of the steel industry and steel research organisations in future research programmes (European, national or regional).
Since 2002 the European Union has grown from 15 Member States to 27 now. With the expiry of the ECSC Treaty in 2002 after 50 years, the ECSC research programme was transformed into the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) but has maintained its underlying principles and objectives. Consequently, after five year experience to updated version of this booklet was published in 2007. Numerous individuals at steel companies, institutes and universities are listed with relevant information about current steel R&D - competencies, resources, and programmes.
The steel R&D world is dynamic and data age rapidly. The EUROFER Research Committee working group NEST is working again on a new update and welcomes new contributions as well as any corrections and/or comments for improvement.
