EAF Carbon Steel Cluster (Dormant as of 18/02/2010)

Task of the Cluster:

The designated task of the EAF Carbon Steel Cluster is to facilitate its members to fulfil their individual obligations under REACH. The Cluster will provide a means by which its members may minimize REACH expenses, collectively address common issues of concern, reach consensus on such issues and, where appropriate, exchange data as well as undertake necessary REACH-related studies on a shared cost basis.

In particular, it is envisaged that the Cluster will address the following:-

  • Identify substances for pre-registration and registration
  • Develop pre-registration/registration strategies
  • Collect or produce information for risk assessments of substances used in the EAF Carbon Steel production process
  • Map the uses of EAF carbon steel
  • Identify human health and environmental exposures related to those uses
  • Provide downstream user exposure and use data to substance producers and/or their consortia or help them to establish contacts
  • Develop common interpretations where uncertainties exist in the REACH text (e.g. alloys, articles, EAF slag, etc) in order to contribute to the REACH Cluster WG process
  • Develop exposure scenarios (where required, also for scrap) for the identified uses
