Brussels, 13 October 2023 – The EU-US Summit planned for 20 October in Washington should pave the way for a global solution to tackle the two existential challenges facing the steel industry worldwide: non-market excess capacity and carbon intensity. Only a strong, international binding agreement can adequately respond to a new global context where government-fuelled, carbon-intensive excess capacity has reached 600 million tonnes, urges the European Steel Association.
Brussels, 25 October 2023 – The decision by the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) to recognise all steel decarbonisation technologies as net-zero and introduce binding sustainability criteria for clean technologies in public procurement is a positive development for the decarbonisation of the steel sector. These new measures included in the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) can ensure faster implementation of EU steel decarbonisation projects at industrial scale. It is now essential to maintain the momentum towards a successful transition, says the European Steel Association.

Fourth quarter 2023 report. Data up to, and including, second quarter 2023
Brussels, 30 October 2023 – Collapsing demand resulting from high inflation and interest rates, exacerbated by conflicts and persistently elevated power prices, is clouding the steel market outlook for 2023. Recession in apparent steel consumption is expected to further deepen (-5.3%) this year, while the anticipated rebound (+7.6%) in 2024 faces geopolitical unpredictability and prolonged economic uncertainty. Imports, despite a declining trend in line with very weak demand, continue to maintain their market share (28%) above historical levels.
Joint letter - Urgent call for action
Brussels, 23 November 2023 – The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has elected a new Board, President and Vice-Presidents. Henrik Adam has been appointed as President of the organisation for a two-year term. He succeeds Francesc Rubiralta Rubió, who has led EUROFER since 2022. The Steel Association of Ukraine has also been accepted as a member.
The EUROFER Board elects among its members the President and 9 Vice-Presidents for a two-year term. The General Assembly appoints the Board.
Brussels, 28 November 2023 – Yesterday’s EU Trade Council meeting shows that the EU and the U.S are still far away from reaching an agreement to advance climate protection, fight trade distortions in the global industry and solve the EU-U.S. trade dispute by the end of 2023, as originally agreed by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Joe Biden in 2021. The lack of a Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminium is a missed opportunity for both ensuring fair trade and advancing on climate protection just before the start of COP28, warns the European Steel Association.
